When Will Terri Schiavo be Allowed to Rest in Peace?

Tuesday June 21, 2005
The June 20, 2005, interment of Terri Shiavo's cremated remains near a pond and fountain in the Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park in Clearwater near Tampa, Florida should have brought about an end to the acrimonious relationship between her husband and her parents. But it didn't. They are all still getting in their cutting remarks and digs at one another.

The service was officiated by a priest and attended by Michael and one of his brothers. Michael Schiavo had the words "I kept my promise" inscribed on the bottom of the bronze grave marker that has three dates listed.

  • December 3, 1963, her birthdate
  • February 25, 1990, "Departed this Earth"
  • March 31, 2005, "at peace"

Her family viewed the phrasing as unkind and political.

Terry's parents charged that Michael Schiavo did not notify them in advance about the burial service. They had believed it would take place in a family plot in Pennsylvania. Michael's attorney disputed the claim that Terri's family wasn't notified.

Gov. Jeb Bush added to the ill feelings between Michael and Terri's parents by asking the Pinellas County chief prosecutor to investigate the alleged gap in the time it took Michael to call 911 after finding Terri unconscious.
