Would You Snoop?
Tuesday August 23, 2005
If you found a draft of a poem on a chair that was written in your husband's handwriting and described a brutal murder, and you knew he had boxes of papers stored in his closet, would you snoop?
What if later, that same poem showed up in the local newspaper after the murder of a woman? Would you snoop then?
Although Paula Rader, the ex-wife of the BTK killer Dennis Rader, told police authorities that she knew nothing about his murderous activities, why didn't she suspect something wasn't right when she found such a poem or saw it in the newspaper in the late 1970s?
Rader said he convinced his scared wife that the poem was written for a college class assignment when he was attending Wichita State University and taking administration of justice classes.
Paula Rader has stated that she didn't go into a clothes closet where many of the mementoes of her husband's secret life were kept in a plastic storage box. She said it was "his closet" and that she listened to what he had to say and didn't question him. She assumed they were from his job and that they weren't important.
Was Paula Rader afraid of her husband?
Prosecutors are hoping to restrict Dennis Rader's access to newspapers, writing instruments and other materials. A hearing will be held next month to consider the conditions of Dennis Rader's confinement.
