Bush Urging Passage of Marriage Amendment

Monday June 5, 2006
In his radio address on 6/3/2006, Mr. Bush urged passage of the constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage in spite of the fact that it is unlikely that the Republicans have enough votes to pass the Marriage Protection Amendment.

The act states "Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman."

Quoted in the Houston Chronicle, President Bush said, "Ages of experience have taught us that the commitment of a husband and a wife to love and to serve one another promotes the welfare of children and the stability of society. Government, by recognizing and protecting marriage, serves the interests of all."

The push for banning gay marriages is perceived by a great number of people such as Ken Schram of Seattle, Washington as an election-year political stunt by Bush and the Republicans.
