Bush Urging Passage of Marriage Amendment
The act states "Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman."
Quoted in the Houston Chronicle, President Bush said, "Ages of experience have taught us that the commitment of a husband and a wife to love and to serve one another promotes the welfare of children and the stability of society. Government, by recognizing and protecting marriage, serves the interests of all."
The push for banning gay marriages is perceived by a great number of people such as Ken Schram of Seattle, Washington as an election-year political stunt by Bush and the Republicans.
