Mom's Pearl Harbor Engagement Ring

Sunday December 7, 2008
I always think of my dad, Ken Goeser, on Pearl Harbor Day, and of my mom's engagement ring. Dad had purchased an engagement ring for my mom and had it stashed in his locker aboard the USS Raleigh that terrible day.

The USS Raleigh was one of the first ships attacked at Pearl Harbor on the morning of December 7, 1941. Dad would never talk about his experiences that day, but I did hear about mom's engagement ring as I was growing up.

On our first visit to Hawaii, one of the first things we did was to go to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The memorial, and the library there, had quite an emotional impact on me. Bob was sensitive enough to drive around to a portion of Oahu where I could get a better view of where the ship had been docked.

That is wonderful story. I heading to Hawaii this Summer and have a book on Pearl Harbor that I’ve been meaning to read. Adding personal stories to global tragedies really make them much more tangible for the outsider. Thanks.
