Racism -- A Marriage Deal Breaker?

Thursday June 11, 2009
Checking in from Rawlins, Wyoming. The negative part of today was the huge thunderstorms we drove through. The positive part was seeing so many antelope and the beautiful wildflowers along the highway. Photo courtesy USDA Forest Service / Jim Hughes

Listening to the news on the car radio today, we heard James W. von Brunn's ex-wife share that their marriage ended due to his racism. Wowowow.com reported "... she and her son "despised" her ex’s beliefs, and she divorced him when she realized the extent of his hatred."

In a call to ABC News, von Brunn's ex-wife said, "... she and the shooting suspect were married for a decade, but divorced about 30 years ago because she disagreed with his extremist views, which she said she learned about after they married."

We wonder if the folks who don't believe in divorce at all think von Brunn's ex-wife was wrong to divorce him. There are people who don't believe in divorce for any reason. They believe that once you are married, you are married for life even if there is physical or emotional abuse, abandonment, illegal activities, child abuse, addictions, etc.

We totally disagree with these individuals and believe that getting divorced is often justified and necessary. And, yes, we believe that racism is a marriage deal breaker.
