Couples Still Stuck in "Mad Men" Marriage Model

By April 10, 2012

Follow me on:

We're catching up on some reading after the Easter holiday and read an article by Vicki Larson about how the"Mad Men" model of marriage is still alive. In the article, Larson interviewed Deborah A. Widiss, an associate law professor at Indiana University's Maurer School of Law about laws that "encourage specialization within marriage into breadwinning and caregiving roles."
"Same-sex couples typically do have more equitable partnerships when it comes to household and parenting responsibilities, making them role models for equality-seeking hetero couples ... Clearly, we're unable to mentally free ourselves from the "Mad Men" model of marriage -- she cleans, cooks and caretakes, he brings home the paycheck -- even if we are physically doing the opposite."
Source: Vicki Larson. "Why Marriage Isn't An Equal Partnership." HuffingtonPost.com. 3/26/2012.

We encourage you to read the article which provides statistics about who does what in homes, wonders if gays and lesbians allowed to marry will "follow gendered division of labor instead of maintaining their more equal partnerships," and questions how we often "idealize marriage as an equal partnership."
