3. RESPONSES FROM THE COMMUNITY
Resolutions, Volunteerism, Wedding

Jim and Paula Crow: Liked the new Year's resolutions -- found it after we posted one on WME-L. Liked your suggestions and would suggest more specific resolutions -- i.e. "Simply -- declutter" could be more specific -- schedule at least 10-15 minutes each day on clutter (you'll be amazed at how much you can actually do is these little snippets of time -- also makes the job less overwhelming. Thanks.
Dan: I read your web page on volunteering with much interest. My family is very involved in our local parish as well as school and community. I must be a yes person too. I didn't realize how much time I was putting into outside projects (like the computer club or special interest groups, Knights of Columbus, etc). I do think that our family gained from my participation, but I think too much caused undo suffering. My daughter is now 15 and I realize now inportant it is to spend time with her. We also have a 3 year old son (born 3 months premature; he received most of our focus for a long time). I believe our children are very important of our family and deserve our time. I have cut out several of the outside activities I was involved in. By saying no to more of the outside activites I have nurtured my relationship with my children and spouse and like what I see. I wish that I had never let it go. Now before I volunteer to do anything, I look at how it will affect my relationship with my family first. Sometimes I am a softy and still say yes.
Nora: Well folks, my baby got married yesterday. It was a real pretty service if I do say so myself. We had to operate on a shoestring budget but it still was nice. Her wedding dress was one she had worn to the prom in her junior year at high school. We took it back to where we bought it & they did some minor alterations. The result was beautiful. I was worried that we wouldn't have enough food for the reception but she said some of her friends were bringing sandwiches. That really upset me at first (I don't like to ask for things) but she told me that this was want her friends had offered. Also a friend of hers & her fiance who has a convenience store sent chicken nuggets. Thank goodness they all pitched in. There was a little over a 100 people there. She asked her sister to be her maid of honor. J** was so tickled to stand up with her. I was thrilled to see my two girls work so well together. J** wanted her sister's wedding day to be special. To that end she did all she could to help. She even pitched in & helped pay for alot of things. My heart almost burst with pride & love as I watched her father walk her down the isle. Tears shimmered in my eyes & my chin quivered when I saw the two of them. Magic. When it came time for our gal to recite her vows to her husband to be, she chose to kneel down to him. He is in a wheel chair. (He has Fredricks Ataxia). It was a very moving & special moment.

6. WEEKLY CHUCKLE
Fannie Flagg, "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Evelyn said there are times when she is even beginning to hate her husband. He'll be sitting around doing nothing, looking at his football games or talking on the phone, and she has this terrible desire to hit him in the head with a baseball bat, for no reason. Poor little Evelyn, she thinks she's the only person in the world that ever had an ugly thought. I told her, her problem is just a natural thing that happens with couples after they've been together so long.
I remember when Cleo got his first set of dentures he was so proud of. They'd make this clicking sound every time he'd take a bit of food, and it just grated on my nerves so bad that there'd be some nights I'd just have to get up from the table to keep myself from saying something...and I loved that man better than anything in the world. But you go through a period when you start to get on one another's nerves. And then, one day--now, I don't know if his teeth stopped clicking on their own, or if I just got used to it or what--but it never bothered me another time. You have that kind of thing happen in the best of families."
