Belgian Marriage Traditions

By Sheri & Bob Stritof, About.com

It is traditional for a Belgian bride to carry a special handkerchief with her on her marriage day.
  • The handkerchief should be embroidered with the bride's name.
  • After the wedding, the handkerchief is framed, and hung on the wall until the next wedding by a sister, daughter, grandddaughter, etc., when it is passed on to the next bride.
  • The new bride's name is then embroidered on it.
  • This handkerchief can be handed down from generation to generation, bride to bride, through the years to become a family heirloom.

Belgian wedding invitations were often printed on two pieces of paper. One page would be from the bride's parents, and the other one from the groom's parents.

The bridesmaids traditionally took up a collection for the poor.
