Hawaii Marriage License Information

If you've just set a date for your wedding, this can be an exciting time for the two of you! Don't let the marriage license laws of Hawaii put a dent in your wedding plans.

Here's what you need to know and what documents to bring with you before you apply for a Hawaii marriage license. We recommend getting this legal aspect of your wedding out of the way about a month before your wedding date.

ID Requirement in Hawaii:

You must show proof of age. If you are 19 years old or older, a valid I.D. or driver's license is sufficient. Anyone who is 18 years of age or younger needs to present a certified copy of a birth certificate.

Residency Requirement:

You do not have to be a resident of Hawaii.
Previous Marriages:

If previously married, the date of divorce or date of spouse's death must be supplied.

Under 18:

If you are 16 or 17 years of age, you must have the written consent of both of your parents, legal guardian, or the family court. If you are 15 years old, you will not only need the written consent of both of your parents or legal guardian, but also the written approval of a judge of the family court. You can obtain the necessary consent forms from a marriage license agent.

Officiants in Hawaii:

The marriage performer must be commissioned by the State of Hawaii, Department of Health.

Miscellaneous:

For the names, addresses and telephone numbers of marriage license agents in the rural and suburban areas or on the neighbor islands, contact a local office of the Hawaii Health Department. License is valid for thirty (30) days.
