Stress in Marriage

Stress... Is it Good or Bad?

By Sheri & Bob Stritof, About.com

It's both!

Two Kinds of Stress

There are two kinds of stress:

Eustress - which is good stress

Distress - which is not so good stress.

Everyone needs some stress in their lives. Without some stress you would just vegetate.

Know Your Own Limits

The key is knowing your limits, having skills for dealing with distress, and looking for ways to enhance eustress.

Without realizing it, when your partner is stressed in a negative way, that negative energy impacts you and your children. It is sort of a domino effect where the dog ends up attacking the cat because someone kicked him!

Ways to Deal with Distress

Look at your own ways of dealing with distress. If you don't have any, do some brainstorming together to find ways. Here are some suggestions:

  • Take a walk.

  • Go out for a short drive in the country.

  • Watch a funny movie to get the endorphins working in the right side of your brain. Laughter is a great stress reducer.

  • Pet your cat or dog.

  • Smile a bit more.

  • Talk to your plants.

  • Ask for a hug.

Ways to Experience more Eustress

Think about when you experience eustress. Most people feel eustress at simple things like having a clean room, a task accomplished, snuggling together, a happy child, a beautiful sunset, a good book, riding a roller coaster, jumping out of an airplane, dancing. You're all so unique that there is no limit in creating eustress in your lives.

However, it takes a decision. Go for it! However, we'll pass on the airplane jump!
