Marriage Tests

Should You Rate Your Marriage?

By Sheri & Bob Stritof, About.com

The answer is NO! Couples should not try to compare their marriage to other marriages. Sure, many of us want to know how well we're doing, or what type of grade our partner would give us. However, unless a test is done by mental health professionals, we urge you to not take the results seriously.

The tests in most magazines and on the Internet are not very scientific. Take them for fun, look at issues that may be red flags in your relationship, and talk about them. Don't make major, life-changing decisions because you or your spouse didn't do well on one of these tests!

There are many tests that can help a relationship. Bob and I learned a lot about ourselves and why we react to one another the way we do when we better understood our personality types. The following tests have been recommended to us by marriage education experts:

  • Emotional Needs Questionnaire

  • Enneagram

  • The Riso-Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator (RHETI)

  • Foccus

  • Keirsey Temperament and Character Sorter

  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

  • Relate
