About.com.Ireland Marriage License Laws

It can be confusing and complicated to get wed in the Emerald Isle ... here are the basics, but do check the resources for specific information.

ID Requirement: Proof of age may be required.

Residency Requirement: 14 days before filing the Notice of Marriage.

If Divorced: He/she must produce either a death certificate or a divorce decree. Additionally a written statement regarding where the party was raised, grew up, and was residing at the time of the divorce, and any other relevant details may be required. Permission must be obtained before the ceremony can take place and this could take two to three weeks. Photocopies of your documents may not be acceptable so check first.

Banns: The local churches take care of this, but if neither party has been attending a place of worship for one month prior to the Notice of Marriage, a special notice must be inserted in a newspaper. The Registrar will provide how this is to be worded and will require seeing complete copies of the newspapers.

Fees: Between £13 and £15

Other Tests: No blood test requirement

Under 18: If either party is under the age of eighteen years, they would have to ask the President of the High Court or Circuit Family Court for permission to marry.

Miscellaneous: The couple must give at least three months written notification to the Registrar for the district in which the marriage is to take place. There is an eight day waiting period after receiving the certificate. The license is good for only three months after the Notice of Marriage has been given.
