| And Baby Makes Three - April Edition | |
Teddy, our first born, was 1 month old when we took him on a 2000 mile trip to visit his four great-grandparents. Not wanting to be like Bekins' parents, we kept things to a minimum. We had a car seat, some extra clothes for when he was out in public, diapers, powder, oil, bottled water, a rattle, a stuffed teddy bear, several small blankets and a backpack type of device to carry him around in. We kept it simple, and had a great vacation.
When we were criss-crossing the U.S. continent, trying to decide where we wanted to live, four of us plus a cat and a large dog lived in a 20 foot RV for 4 months. We had a very small black and white TV, too. We played imaginery badminton when we lost all the birdies. We played hopskotch, played card games, took lots of walks, and looked at the stars at night. We didn't have much storage space, so we had minimal clothing, towels, linens, dishes, pots and pans, etc. Since there wasn't much to keep clean, we didn't have to spend much time cleaning. Our two younger children who were with us on that adventure still consider it one of their happier memories.
As parents, trying to provide the best for our kids, we can sometimes overwhelm them with stuff. Keeping their belongings to a reasonable amount also makes it easier for them to choose what to wear and to be able to keep their rooms looking presentable.
Living simply usually results in having more with less.
