Mother Nurture: a Mother's Guide to Health in Body, Mind, and Intimate Relationships

by Rick Hanson, Ph.D., Jan Hason, L.Ac., and Ricki Pollycove, M.D.
Publisher: Penguin Putnam
Guide Rating -
Pros  •  Suggestions on how couples can work together so the load is shared fairly.
•  Has a very thorough index and helpful appendices.
•  Helps couples understand and support each other.
Cons  •  Title suggests this is just for women, but men can also benefit from reading it. Dads need nurturing, too!
The Bottom Line - Integrating perspectives from the fields of psychology, acupuncture, nutrition, and gynecology, the authors cover everything from stress relief and balancing home and work, to keeping love alive in a marriage. This would be a great gift for mom on Mother's Day, or for expectant parents.

Key Points
•  Part One: Understanding the Challenges of Motherhood includes a section on how being a mom can impact a marriage. Part Two: Nurturing Your Mind has suggestions for reducing stress and turning negative emotions into peace and contentment.
•  Part Three: Nurturing Your Body recommends ways to stay well and explains what to do if you're feeling depleted. Part Four: Nuturing Your Intimate Relationship centers on communication with your spouse, being partners in parenthood, and how to stay intimate friends after becoming parents. The important issues of family of origin and sex after having children are discussed.
•  Part Five: Managing the Marathon of Motherhood helps moms juggle motherhood and work including moms who work at home. The resources in the appendices are very informational.

Soothing Suggestions
This practical and easy to use book on nurturing is a great reference book for both wives and husbands. Women today are working longer hours and sleeping less than their own mothers. "Mother Nurture" is a holistic and comprehensive plan in taking care of oneself.

There are one-minute, five-minute, fifteen-minute, thirty-minute, and one-hour soothers along with helpful information to lower stress, lift moods, regain energy, prevent Depleted Mother Syndrome, build teamwork and intimacy with mate, solve health problems, balance home and work, and more.

I highly recommend this book. Being good to yourself is one of the most important things you can do for those you love.
