Product Summary
The Road Less Traveled: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth

by M. Scott Peck, M.D.
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Guide Rating -
Pros  •  Timeless message.
•  Insightful.
•  Interesting blend of Jung, New Age, psychology and Christianity.
Cons  •  If you're looking for quick, easy solutions to your problems without having to struggle or feel pain, then skip this book.
The Bottom Line - Beginning the book with the sentence, "Life is difficult", Dr. Peck leans on old fashioned values and truths. Learning to delay gratification, accepting responsibility for decisions, being dedicated to truth and reality, and having the ability to balance it all are important tools for us all, but especially for married couples.

Key Points
•  Discipline has to be internal. Love is the will to extend oneself for the purpose of nurturing one's own growth or that of another person.
•  We are born inept. We can't do much or focus when we first enter this world. As we age, we move from very significant dependence to independence. Maturation tells us that all that really works in interdependence, especially if we want to have a successful marriage.
•  Because things change and shift, we have to continue to work on our relationships. There is no way of knowing in totality what our spouse or children will be like in ten years.

Guide Review
Marriage Can't Just Be Labor
You may not agree with everything Peck says, but there are many comments to get the two of you thinking about your own marriage. The way we use the words "work" and "hurt" in our marriages are prime examples.

The difference between work and labor is that when we labor, there is no value to it.

People in marital relationships will hurt one another. However, it is important to make the distinction between whether the word hurt means pain or whether it means damage. Some things don't damage you even though they are painful. We can often handle pain when there is a value for it.

This is one of those books to have sitting on your bookshelf so you can read it again when life becomes difficult. It can help you live a balanced life.
