Quotes:

Auguste, to his mother about Jeanne: "You asked me: "is there a cousin at Lafarge? It there of them be one, but you like her? I believe it, under certain reports/ratios. She has anything a brilliant party, neither fortune, neither the beauty, neither the glare of the world, nor the musical talents; only aspect more sympathetic nerve and a heart of gold which she carries on her face."

He added further: "It is called Jeanne-Emilie Baheux de Puysieux, she is 36 years old, she was born in France, girl of a ruined industrialist. Orphan, she was adopted by Mrs. Walker, of Canadian origin which I knew in Newport at the time of my first voyage to the United States. Mrs. Walker died since, without leaving will."

"Fortunately, the legitimate heirs did not forget Jeanne-Emilie, by granting a modest pension to her. Jeanne was adopted like a pretty puppy! Her merit is to have educated herself, learning, for example, the piano without Master. Her only ambition is to be liked. As for me, all that I seek is a tender and devoted affection."

"The ambition should apply only to work and not to the marriage. If you test doubts or regrets, I could not be happy."

Jeanne to her future mother-in-law: "Very honoured and dear Madam, I am still under the charm of what Mr Bartholdi said to me! You reach his project, you entirely approve it. I then to believe in such an amount of happiness! Me, the partner of his life, it is a dream, I am so happy that I am afraid. I do not need brilliance for the world. I am filled of the desire to improve to me to be worthy of him."
