Both Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds appeared to have had successful marriages in the past. Hopefully, they would have been able to take what they knew worked best in those relationships to make sure their marriage to one another was successful, but that wasn't the case.

1/16/08: A legal wedding ceremony was not held. "After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forego having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further," Murphy and Edmonds told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. "While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends.”

Born:
Edward Regan Murphy: April 3, 1961 in Brooklyn, New York. He was raised in the Bushwick projects of Brooklyn.

Tracey McQuarn Edmonds: February 18, 1967 in Los Angeles, California.

How Eddie and Tracey Met:

Tracey and Eddie had met briefly years before they got to know one another again at the launch party for Our Stories Films. They began dating in fall 2006 and were engaged in July 2007.

Wedding Date:
The wedding of Eddie and Tracey on January 1, 2008 at a private island off Bora Bora was not a legal wedding.

"The wedding that took place in Bora Bora was a ceremony to bind Eddie and Tracey spiritually in the presence of family and friends," according to the spokesperson. "The couple plan a legal ceremony as soon as they return to the States."

The "spiritual" ceremony was held under a 6,000 shell covered gazebo on the beach at sunset before 25 guests. According to People.com, Tracey "walked barefoot down the aisle to Gladys Knight's "Makings of You."

The bride wore a custom-designed form-fitting dress by stylist and designer Sugia Nazel and Jill Baracci, designer and owner of Baracci boutique. Murphy wore a cream suit and vest with an off-white handkerchief."

Best man was Johnny Gill, the maid of honor was Nicole Avant, and the matron of honor was Julie Lev. Both Eddie and Tracey had family members present at the wedding and reception. Their wedding cake had four layers and was decorated with handmade sugar cymbidium and dendrobium orchids.
