Freddy Fender and Vangie Huerta Marriage Profile

After facing many ups and downs in their nearly 50 years together, Freddy and Vangie Fender's marriage ended with Freddy's death from lung cancer on October 14, 2006. In August 2006 Freddy learned of his diagnosis of inoperable lung cancer.

Freddy Fender aka Baldemar Garza Huerta: June 4, 1937 in San Benito, Texas.

Evangelina (Vangie) Muñiz Huerta: abt. 1941.

Died:

Freddy: October 14, 2006 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Freddy died at age 69 from lung cancer. His family was by his side.

His funeral and memorial services will be held in San Benito, Texas.

Wedding Date:

Freddy and Vangie were married twice.

  • August 9, 1957. Freddy was 21 years old and Vangie was 16 years old. She was working at a local diner as a counter girl. They had some marriage problems in late 1981. They divorced around 1993.

  • 1995. Freddy and Vangie remarried.

Freddy and Vangie have four children:

  • Baldemar Huerta Jr: Born May 18, 1958.

  • Tammy Loriane Huerta: Born September 6, 1961.

  • Daniel Huerta: Born December 22, 1966.

  • Marla Ann Huerta Garcia: Born January 1, 1981. In January 2002, at the age of 21, gave donated a kidney to her father in January, 2002 at University Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.

Occupations:

Freddy: Grammy award winner, singer, musician, actor, auto mechanic. In 1954 When he was 16 years, Freddy dropped out of high school and joined the Marines. He served for three years. He later received his GED and studied sociology at Del Mar Junior College in Corpus Christi.

Vangie: Freddy's manager.

Residence:

Corpus Christi, Texas.
