How Star and Al Met:

They met on November 13, 2003 at the New York City celebration party of the release of an Alicia Keys album.

Engagement and Proposal:

On February 11, 2004, Al asked his mother, Ada, for her blessing on their union. On February 12, 2004, he surprised Star by bringing her family to New York to ask them for her hand in marriage.

On his knees in front of Star, Al promised to love her for the rest of his life as he gave her a promise ring.

At the beginning of the 4th quarter of the February 15, 2004 NBA All-Star game in Los Angeles Staraccepted Al's marriage proposal and a princess cut diamond engagement ring.

Their engagement party was on March 27, 2004 at the "Supper Club" in New York City.

November 13, 2004. Their wedding was estimated to be a $1 million dollar affair. The wedding was held at St. Bartholomew's Church in New York City, New York. Al and Star had 500 guests, 3 matrons of honor, 12 bridesmaids, 2 junior bridesmaids, 3 best men, 12 groomsmen, 3 junior groomsmen, 6 footmen, 4 ring bearers, 4 flower girls.

Star's wedding dress was a Reem Acra taffeta, strapless white gown with a 27-foot long crystal encrusted sheer veil. Al and the other men in the bridal party wore custom fitted tuxedos from Sarno Tuxedos.

Wedding Jewelry:

She wore 15 karat diamond earrings valued at $500,000 loaned to her by Fred Leighton. The total cost of the wedding jewelry loaned to Star and Al for the wedding came to over $1 million dollars.

Star and Al's wedding reception was held at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, New York.

The guests at the wedding reception received personalized LL Bean canvas goodie bags. The gifts in the bags included jewelry, clothing, shoes, fragrances, makeup, Ninento games, books, bibles, health club certificates, and more.

Al and Star spent their honeymoon in Dubai at the "The Royal Mirage" and at the "Al Maha Desert Resort".

They also spent time in The Maldives.

Wedding Controversy:

Star and Al's wedding was controversial not only because it was lavish, but because she accepted not only wedding attire, but quite a few other wedding services and wedding supplies for free from businesses looking for publicity.

Star, about receiving the freebies: "I don't think I took the viewers on the right journey with me, and I want to apologize for that. I was a 40-year-old who, according to urban legend, had a better chance of being kidnapped by a terrorist than getting married. And I was caught in the euphoria. And I think I used, and some would say abused, my celebrity in planning the wedding."
