Amelia and George's Other Marriages and Relationships

Amelia had one previous engagement:
  • Samuel Chapman: Samuel was an attorney from Boston. Amelia broke their engagement on November 23, 1928 while she was in Cleveland, Ohio.
Amelia after she announced that her engagement to Chapman was off: "You never can tell what I will do. If I was sure of the man, I might get married tomorrow. I am very sudden, you know, and make up my mind in a second."

George had one previous marriage and two marriages after Amelia's disappearance:
  • Dorothy Binney: Dorothy was born July 20, 1888 in New York. George and Dorothy met in July 1908 on a Sierra Club camping trip near Mount Whitney. Their engagement was announced publicly on December 29, 1910.
  • George and Dorothy were married in an evening ceremony on October 26, 1911 at the home of Dorothy's family in South Beach, Connecticut. Delmonico's catered the reception. Dorothy and George honeymooned in Central America before settling in their new home in Bend, Oregon.

    George and Dorothy had two sons. The distance between George and Dorothy grew, and after they both had affairs, they divorced in December 1929 after Dorothy took up residence in Reno, Nevada. Dorothy charged George with failure to provide.

    A month after her divorce from George, Dorothy married Captain Frank Monroe Upton on January 12, 1930 in the West Indies. Dorothy had two other marriages before her death in 1982.

  • Jean-Marie Cosigny James: George and Jean-Marie were married on May 21, 1939 in Boulder City, Nevada. George was 24 years older than Jean-Marie. She filed for divorce in 1945 citing incompatibility as the reason for the end of their marriage.
  • Margaret Havilland: George and Margaret married in 1945. Their marriage ended in 1950 when George died.
