How to Divorce-Proof Your Marriage

By

Do you want to divorce-proof your marriage? Consider these three things the two of you must do to keep your marriage strong.
  • Be friends with each other and respect one another.
  • Deal with your differences. Fighting fairly is a skill you both must learn.
  • Don't be afraid to talk about difficult issues.

In order to have a long lasting marriage, it is also important to remember to show your love for one another.

Researcher Todd Migliaccio is interviewing couples married 30 years or more to see what they can tell others about long and happy marriages. What has he learned so far?

"The key is how you overcome obstacles," he said. "Every marriage that's together 40 years is not perfect all the time. These people had their problems, and they worked through them. Just because it's hard doesn't mean it's bad," he added. "It means you're working through something you're committed to."

Note: Not all marriages can be saved or should be saved. Sometimes love isn't enough. This is especially true in situations where there is domestic violence, addictions, illegal behavior, or serial adultery.
