2/1/06: Samuel Alito became the Supreme Court's 110th Justice when he was confirmed by the Senate on 1/31/06 and sworn in on 2/1/06. His wife, Martha-Ann, watched the Senate vote with him in the Roosevelt Room of the White House.
1/11/06: The confirmation hearings of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito created an environment so contentious that Alito's wife, Martha-Ann Bomgardner, left in tears near the end of the day. It was later reported that she also had a migraine headache.
Samuel Anthony Alito, Jr. was born on April 1, 1950 in Trenton, New Jersey.
Martha-Ann Bomgardner was born on July 31, 1953 in Ft. Knox, Kentucky.
Wedding Date:
Samuel and Martha-Ann were married in February, 1985.Samuel and Martha-Ann have two children.
- Philip Samuel Alito, a student at Brown College at Monroe Hill. Philip competes in tennis.
- Laura Alito, a student at james Caldwell High School. Laura competes in swimming, set school records in the 100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke, and qualified for the Girls All-State Team in March, 2005.
Samuel Alito, Jr. is a Catholic.
Samuel attended Princeton, where he received his A.B. in 1972, and Yale Law School, where he received his J.D. in 1975.
Martha-Ann was a student at Rutgers University inn France, 1973-1974. She received her BA from the University of Kentucky in 1975 and her MSL.S. from the University of Kentucky in 1977.
Samuel has most recently been a Judge of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. He was also the U.S. attorney in New Jersey from 1987-1989, and an assistant to the solicitor general in the Justice Department from 1981-1985.
Martha-Ann has been a law librarian.
Before his appointment as Justice of the Supreme Court, Samuel and Martha-Ann resided in a 1999 built, two-story, $500,000 home in West Caldwell, New Jersey.
Samuel Alito is said to be quiet, reserved, mild-mannered, generous, gracious, having a wry sense of humor, and very smart. He loves to read, especially biographies and history. Samuel is a gourmet cook, and a great fan of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Martha has a show dog, Avonlea's Affable Zeus, an English Springer Spaniel.
Samuel, about his family: "My wife, Martha, has been a constant source of love and support for the past 20 years. My children, Philip and Laura, are the pride of my life and they have made sure that being a judge has never gone to my head -- they do that very well on a, pretty much, daily basis."
