1874: Ellen "Nellie" Wrenshall Grant married Algernon Charles Frederick Sartoris in the East Room at the White House on May 21, 1874. The marriage was not a happy one due to Algernon's drinking problem and alleged affairs. Algernon died in 1893 and although some sources state they were divorced, newspaper articles of the era refer to Nellie as a widow. In 1912, Nellie married a long-time friend, Franklin Hatch Jones. Shortly after her marriage to Frank, Nellie had a stroke and lived with poor health and paralysis until her death.
