Getting a Second License

Getting a Second License

By Sheri & Bob Stritof, About.com

After four year of being secretly married, J. and her husband want to have a big wedding. However, they don't want anyone to know that they are already married.

Question

My husband and I were married 4 years ago, but no one is aware of this fact. We are finally able to afford the wedding we wanted, and my parents demanded, and will have that this Fall.

My question is in regards to obtaining another marriage license. After much thought and discussion, we decided it would be better not to tell the officiant we are already married and thus we would need to get another license. I am worried this may be illegal or cause an issue.

If so, we would have to tell the officiant the truth. But we would prefer to go through the entire process as if it is the first time so that no one else may have to lie about this. We regret putting ourselves in this position and would not want anyone else, especially the officiant, to be in a similar situation.

We are also worried an officiant may refuse to marry us if they know we are already married. If you could let me know if there would be any issues or laws broken by obtaining another license in a new town I would be very grateful.

Thank you in advance for your time.
