Bottom line... obtaining a second marriage license in most locales is not legal because you would be lying when you fill out the application and say you are not married to anyone.This isn't the case in New York state, though. They do allow couples to apply for a second marriage license if an officiant requires one for a second ceremony.
Most officiants have dealt with this issue of a secret marriage many times and will work with a couple so that others don't discover their secret.
