Dual-Diet Marriages
Effective Coping Skills

By Sheri & Bob Stritof, About.com

When a vegetarian and a meat eater fall in love and marry, their marriage isn't doomed.

Although mixed diet issues can severely challenge such a relationship, here are some ways to cope with differing dietary choices.

  • Develop good listening skills.
  • Learn effective problem solving skills in dealing with any philosophical or emotional conflicts about dietary choices.
  • Accept and respect one another's dietary choices. Remember that for some vegetarians and vegans, their diet choices are like a religion.
  • Remain flexible.
  • Set the kitchen rules in the beginning of your marriage so you both have a clear understanding of what is acceptable and what isn't for the two of you.
    • Which dishes, pans, utensils, etc. can be used for meat cooking.
    • Whether or not animal products can be stored in the refrigerator.
    • Agreement to not sneak rice milk, tofu, etc. into recipes.

  • Don't judge, pressure, nag, or preach at your partner about eating habits.
  • Refrain from making negative remarks about what your spouse will eat or won't eat.
  • Discuss how you will handle your children's diets.
  • Continue to further your knowledge about nutrition.
  • Take responsibility for your own eating choices.
  • Maintain a high degree of tolerance.
  • When dining out at restaurants, choose where to eat with sensitivity to menu choices.
  • Handle family social gatherings by eating beforehand or taking something along with you to eat.
