Sir Edmund: January 11, 2008 at the age of 88 in Auckland, New Zealand. Sir Edmund died following a heart attack.

A state funeral in Auckland and a memorial service in the Himalayas were planned for Sir Edmund.

How June and Ed Met:

Ed and June had known one another for many years.

According to National Geographic, June and Ed were married on November 30, 1989 at his home in Auckland, New Zealand. Dame Cath Tizard was the officiant at their wedding.

After four years they came home, to their separate homes. 'Even though June was only a mile away, it seemed a rather lonely existence. It was our children who solved the problem for us.' Edmund: Adventurer, mountaineer, author, beekeeper, philanthropist. On May 29, 1953 Edmund and Tenzing Norgay, a Nepalese Sherpa, were the first men to climb Mount Everest. Sir Edmund explored the South Pole and the source of the Yangtze River.

A long-time friend of Edmund, Peter Mulgrew died on November 28, 1979 when he took Edmund's place as a guide on the sightseeing flight of Air New Zealand Flight 901. The airplane crashed on Mount Erebus in Antarctica.
