The commercialization of Valentine's Day was increased by the beginning of
Whitman's candy and by the introduction of
Esther Howland's commercial Valentines.
"In old ballads maidens are directed to pray, cross-legged, for good luck on this day, and it was also customary to hang shoes outside of the window on St. Valentine's Eve so that their love might prosper."
