Kansas to Consider Minimum Age for Marriage
Saturday October 22, 2005
The governor of Kansas, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, has asked for a strict ban of anyone younger than 16 years of age being allowed to get married.
Although there is no minimum age for marriage in Kansas, anyone who is less than 18 years old is required to have permission of both parents, a guardian, or a judge in order to get married. Governor Sebelius also believes that the requirement for parental or judicial permission should remain for those individuals who are 16 or 17 years old.
It is assumed that the governor's request will easily pass through the Legislature within 4 to 6 weeks after it convenes on January 9, 2006.
Eleven states don't allow anyone under the age of 16 to marry.
