The separation and divorce of Lance and Kristin Armstrong surprised many people. Here is information about the couple's marriage relationship.


Lance Edward Gunderson Armstrong: 9/18/1971 in Plano, Texas. Lance was named after Lance Rentzel, a Dallas Cowboys wide receiver. Lance was adopted by Terry Armstrong, his mother's second husband. His father, Eddie Gunderson, walked out on his mother, Linda, when Lance was two years old.

Kristin Cate Richard: Abt. 1971 in Westlake Village, California.

How Lance and Kristin Met:

Kristin and Lance met in January 1997 at the "Ride for the Roses" charity event. The event was a few weeks after Lance completed intense chemotherapy to treat testicular cancer.

Wedding Date:

Lance and Kristin were married on May 8, 1998, in Santa Barbara, California. He is said to have taken his bike to the wedding. Kristin's wedding bouquet was made entirely of gardenias.


Before Lance began chemotherapy for testicular cancer, he banked sperm. Their children were conceived with that banked sperm through in vitro fertilization.

In the spring I spend two months away, then spend a month at home and now it's been three months and I'll be home next week. This is what is unfortunately going to force me to change my schedule, because I refuse to do that again. My kids are three years old and five years old and in three months they change completely and I'm not prepared to do that again."

While married to one another, Lance and Kristin had homes in Girona, Spain and Austin, Texas. Lance had his European training headquarters in Girona, Spain.


Kristin and Lance announced their separation from one another on February 24, 2003. After a brief reconciliation in June 2003, the couple filed for divorce in September 2003 and divorced in December 2003.

After the Divorce:

Kristin decided to reside in Austin, Texas.
Kristin: "When my kids leave my house, particularly on Chrstmas Day, it leaves a hole in my heart the size of, well, m y heart. Lance and I get along well; the kids handle it fine; it's just me that aches on the inside. I drove home, parked my car in the driveway, and immediately hit the pavement running."

After her divorce from Lance, she tried counseling but said that counseling was a waste of her time. She said that her faith is what got her through that trying time.

Kristin: "Faith. My faith in God. I'm a Christian ... Catholic. I've always been this way, but I think definitely any time you go through a season of trial in your life, your faith deepens. It's something beautiful that comes out of a difficult time. At least, it worked that way for me. There's no doubt about it. I wouldn't have made it without it."
