He does accompany Dolly to private family gatherings. Here's information on how they met, their wedding, and quotes about their long lasting marriage.

Dolly: “He [Carl] saw me walking outside of the Wishy Washy Laundromat the day I got to Nashville and that was in 1964. Two years later, we were married and I always make jokes of course that it’s been wishy washy ever since, but it’s worked. It was his first marriage and mine, I’m sure it’ll probably be the last.”

Quotes About the Marriage of Dolly Parton and Carl Dean:

Dolly: "I look like a serial bride, but I'm a 'one and done' kind of girl ... I take commitment very seriously. You find its importance to me in every aspect of my life, but where it is most important to me is in my relationship with Carl. Like everyone else, we have our ups and downs, but we have always been and will always be committed to our love for each other. I do not easily cut and run. If something is broken, then let's fix it. If it's wrong, then let's make it right. This is just my nature -- some call it commitment, but it just as easily can be called stubbornness!"

Dolly: "Well, there's no perfect marriage, and, no, I've never thought about packing it in. I just kick his ass and go on the road. (Laughs) Or, he'll kick mine and go to the barn. We never argue or bicker back and forth. I've never wanted to be married to anybody but Carl, and even if he died, I don't think I'd ever marry again. I may date or something, but I think he's probably it for me."

Dolly on infidelity: "But I'd kill him [Carl] if I knew he was with somebody. We love people. He knows I'm a flirt and a tease, but it's harmless. I've never met the man that would take his place."

Dolly on spending time apart: “We’re good friends first of all, and we knew each other before I got to be a star, so it’s not like one of those where I have to worry that he loves me for some other reason than what we loved each other for [initially],” she explained. “He’s very kind, very understanding, crazy, funny, witty. He’s a homebody… I have my freedom. He likes to stay at home and he doesn’t want me in his face all the time and I don’t want to be in it, so it works good! We’re very different and they say opposites attract… we respect each other’s space and we like each other a lot.”

Dolly on flirting: " But I dress to be comfortable for me, and you shouldn't be blamed because you want to look pretty. My husband likes me to look this way, and he's the one I want to please ... I love to flirt, and I've never met a man I didn't like. Men are my weakness. Short, fat, bald or skinny – I've had crushes on some very unusual men but Carl knows I'll always come home and I'm not having sex with these people – I'm just flirtin' and having fun."

Dolly about their "first and only outing at a country-music event" in 1966: "This was my first big record. It went to No. 1 for Bill and it was BMI's Song of the Year. So Carl and I got dressed up, he was in a tux, and we drove to the dinner. We got out and walked up the red carpet, and went inside and sat through dinner and the awards, and I went up and got my award. After the dinner we walked back out and they brought us our car -- I don't even remember what we were driving then -- and we got in it and headed for home. Carl turned to me and said, 'Dolly, I want you to have everything you want and I'm happy for you, but don't you ever ask me to go to another one of them dang things again!'"

Dolly about Carl: "You wouldn't know him now. His hair is gray, he's very distinguished looking. But he's a good guy. We've been friends for all these years, in addition to everything else that a wonderful married couple is supposed to be."

Stephen Miller: "Among Dolly's revelations: Carl enjoyed talking politics and religion which she avoided, he disliked the food she prepared and would usually rustle up plainer fare for himself, he was a man of routine, she a woman of spontaneity, he took little or no interest in her numerous business interests and if having problems in particular areas of her life Dolly tended to filter what Carl needed to know. One area wihch brought them together was a love of dogs."

Samantha Rudnick: "When asked how she keeps grounded through all her success, she has said all she needs are her two true loves -- music and Dean."
